How to choose the perfect celebrant

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming. We rarely find ourselves in situations with quite as many choices to make. The cake, the invitations, the dress, music, location, food, guests… the list goes on.

While all these things will help you create the perfect day, it is the ceremony itself, which creates that everlasting first impression and lifelong memories for you and your guests. The person who sets the tone for the ‘I do’s’is your celebrant. Here are my top five top tips on how to choose the right one for this very important role.

Meet and greet

The feeling you get when you first meet a celebrant is often a good indicator whether you have found your match. I believe that meeting your potential celebrant in person, or at least via video call, is the only way to find out if they’re the right fit. It’s also a great opportunity to discuss what type of ceremony you want and how you will collaborate to create something truly bespoke. If it feels good, the ideas are flowing and you are getting excited to work together, you have your celebrant!

Book in early

A good celebrant is often booked out well in advance. I recommend starting your research early and contacting potential celebrants as soon as you have set a date. This will give you plenty of time to meet a few and find the perfect fit. Once you’ve made up your mind, secure a booking without delay.

Planning the ‘I do’

There are a few legal phrases that must be included in your ceremony. Apart from those you’re free to decide what is said. In the planning phase, your celebrant’s job is to find out what is unique about you as a couple, and then create a ceremony which re-tells your personal love story in a meaningful way. Make sure to ask your celebrant what inspires them to write a ceremony that’s truly memorable and bespoke.

The equipment

It’s the little things that matter. Whether your ceremony is at the beach or indoors, the right equipment will make all the difference. If your celebrant provides their own state-of-the-art PA system, your guests and videographer will be forever thankful! You put so much effort into planning your vows, make sure they’re heard.

The legalities

Getting married is all about your personal love story. But, there are a few other things that can make or break your day. I highly recommend choosing a celebrant who will confidently get all the legal bits and pieces in order. Also find out if they’re a member of the Australian Marriage Celebrants Inc., which ensures they’re up-to-date with current knowledge and best practice.

Most importantly, your celebrant should be approachable and fun. After all, your wedding is one of the best moments in your life.

I can’t wait to hear all about your personal love story and help you celebrate your special day.
