How to get your wedding featured in a bridal magazine

Customised photo albums, videos, framed images and #instafeeds are all awesome mementos of your special day.

But what if I told you there’s another way to keep those memories alive? Get your wedding featured in a bridal magazine and enjoy seeing your love story carefully crafted into a beautiful, editorial keepsake to share with your family and friends.

Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

To find out what makes for a magazine-worthy wedding, I’ve chatted to one of my beautiful couples, Isaac and Keisha, who have recently been featured in ‘Your Local Wedding Guide’, as well as Bronwyn McDonald, Creative Vision Wedding Planner at Scenic Rim Bride.

Big ticket items

There are lots of aspects to a wedding, but the big-ticket items when it comes to getting selected for a bridal feature are not about glamour or big budgets – they’re all about you and your unique love story.

Bronwyn says that “emotion evoked from the couple and inspirational styling elements that have been incorporated into the theming,” are the things she’s most drawn towards when she picks the perfect feature couple for her publication.

Think great colour combinations, unique favours and traditions, a stunning dress… basically it has to be a bit different and exciting to capture an editor’s attention.

Bronwyn also says that it’s important to be yourself and to enjoy the special memories you are creating. “How relaxed you are will reflect in the fun you have on the big day. It will also result in better images to share your forever story.”

The finer details

Engaging reputable suppliers who specialise in their field is also super important when it comes to creating a magazine-worthy wedding. A good stylist, wedding planner and photographer can tie in all the elements that reflect your personal love story and style. They may also have existing connections with suitable publications and can get the ball rolling for you.

For Keisha and Isaac choosing a great photographer definitely paid off. “Our photographer asked if we would like to be featured in a magazine and we agreed. We knew it was something that would help him, as well as be a great keepsake for us,” Keisha says.

Bronwyn adds that you should also think about copyright before approaching publications. “Most platforms and magazines will only accept a submission from couples who have permission from their photographer. It’s best all round if your photographer can submit the images on your behalf, as most will know the drill and have good leads from previously published weddings,” she says.

What’s involved

The input that’s required from you will vary from publication to publication. For Keisha and Isaac the magazine they were featured in sent a list of questions for them to answer. “I gave fairly detailed answers, as I thought providing more information would probably be helpful,” Keisha says.

Once they provided their answers, the publication sent them a draft of their story and they were able to give feedback.

“As our feature was through our photographer, we had no idea what photos they were going to use. If I could turn back time, I probably would have asked our photographer which photos he planned to submit. I completely trust him but there were one or two that I wouldn't have chosen personally and I might have asked to swap them,” Keisha adds.

Why you’ll love getting featured

If you need any more convincing about getting your wedding featured in a magazine, or on another platform, Bronwyn says that it truly is the highest form of flattery. “It makes for a beautiful keepsake to thank your suppliers and to share with your family and friends,” she says.

Keisha also adds that it was the most special way for her memories to be captured. “Once we saw the feature in print, we realised it was going to be a pretty awesome thing to show our children one day. I think it’s also nice to try share advice - weddings can be so overwhelming, so hopefully our words help other couples currently planning their wedding.”
