When Luke proposed to Sarah

It’s my favourite time of year – proposal season!

For many brides and grooms their engagement is one of the most memorable and romantic moments in their lives. Often when I first meet my couples and ask them to share their engagement story, I can literally feel the love they have for each other.

From carefully planned, to totally spontaneous, a proposal sets the stage for your incredible journey towards getting married.

Here’s one of my favourite stories to celebrate the season!

An adventure in the Swiss Alps

It was thanks to a couple of mutual friends, who spotted Sarah strolling by their apartment on a balmy Bondi summer’s night, that Luke and Sarah first met. They coaxed her upstairs for a nightcap and the rest is pretty much history. Luke says that they hit it off straight away and Sarah agrees that he won her over by being so kind and endearing.

After four years of relationship bliss, and a few subtle hints by Sarah, Luke proposed on the 4th of July last year – a date they now jokingly remember as “the day he lost his independence,” Sarah laughs. Luke, being a person who never does anything in halves, planned a proposal that not only took on pretty epic proportions, but also left Sarah completely surprised.

To set the scene, Sarah explains that ever since they met, she’s wanted to take Luke on a romantic picnic. “Luke never agreed. He thinks they are impractical - having to sit on the ground with your drinks getting hot and so on.”

So, it came as a big surprise, that when Sarah and Luke went on a month-long holiday to Europe, he promised that, among a range of other activities, he would finally take her on that elusive picnic date.

Ignoring his fear of heights, flying, and, well…picnics, Luke signed them up for two days of adrenalin-inducing extreme sports in the Swiss Alps. They went white water rafting down a ragged mountain range and launched themselves off a cliff, strapped to a kite and local adrenaline junkie - otherwise known as hang-gliding.

Finally, things slowed down and Luke took Sarah trekking skyward for a mountain-top picnic, complete with cheese board and champagne. “The whole way up Sarah was complaining that the altitude was making her fingers swell. I was panicking, because in my pockets I had an engagement ring that had to fit,” Luke says. His adventure glands started to fire and thinking on his feet, the only logical solution seemed to convince Sarah to take a swim in an icy mountain stream to reduce the swelling.

Even though she didn’t take the ice bath challenge, Luke was able to pull off a magic proposal overlooking the alps. “During our picnic I looked at her with the ring outstretched. I told her how much I loved her and asked her if she would be my wife. Between sobs and mouthfuls of cheese, she said yes,” Luke remembers.

Sarah says she felt completely elated. “We had started our European trip a couple of weeks before getting engaged and I honestly didn’t think things could get any better…until Luke proposed!”

Luke and Sarah got married on the 5th of July at Cowbell Creek in Austinville, QLD.
